    November 2011 – January 2012
From Easter until November 2011 30 Year 10 & 11 students at Centralian Senior College in Alice Springs worked on pieces for an exhibition at a community gallery in Alice Springs. The exhibition is part of the VET and college based intensives program.
The exhibition had an emphasis on textile and text themed works but also showcased work in other media including painted boxes, jewellery, watercolours, paper mache sculpture and screen based works.
Centralian Senior College is the only public year 10 -12 college situated in Alice Springs. As part of the Art Intensive course the students have learnt a range of artwork skills from visiting artists, including Nicky Shonkala, Philomena Hali and David Nixon. They have explored Knit Graffitti, felting, animation and V-Jaying.
They also have a unique opportunity to learn about exhibition planning, exhibition design and coordination -- everything from marketing to installation, documentation and artwork sales. Once the students have developed their own artworks they will then work in small groups to develop the exhibition.
Alice Springs provides a support base for many surrounding isolated communities spanning across three states. The manufacture and sale of art and craft products is an integral part of the local economy. The majority of these products are indigenous in origin and supply both the tourism and fine art markets. Employment opportunities exist in the Creative Arts for artists, arts support workers and arts managers. The aim of this exhibition project is to introduce students to Creative Arts enterprise by providing exposure to a range of visual arts processes, visual arts products and potential outlets.
This project has been supported through DET Artists in Schools, DET Enterprise Grants and the Arts NT Being A Territory competition.
